Workshop

Who is this ‘SRC’? And what do they do at Manly Selective Campus? Read on to find out!

The SRC stands for the School Representative Council and in a nutshell students are elected by their grade to represent and talk about any issues concerning them in the school. Approximately 5-8 students are elected, depending on the grade, and we meet once a week to discuss any concerns or ideas that the student body have.

The SRC contains many levels of representation and being elected at school is only the start! The next level is District SRC, where representatives from schools in particular district combine to discuss issues relevant to their area. After this there is State SRC, where each district in NSW is represented and can discuss issues on a state level. And finally there is National SRC- where people from each state are represented and members can discuss issues in a national context.

To be elected into the SRC, students must prepare a speech and deliver this to their grade, explaining why they would make a great SRC representative and their vision for the on coming year. Each grade then votes (via a secret ballot) and then the representatives are announced! Our Captains for this year are Joseph Nizeti and Ariane Blom; and our Vice-Captains are Rory Townsend and Jinny Dawson.

After the election the new SRC representatives go on their annual SRC Camp where they plan their goals and visions for the year. This year we went to Elanora Heights Conference centre and it was such a great experience to bond with SRC representatives from other grades and brainstorm together! We also elected people into numerous SRC positions: The Secretary is Kate Maclennan with her Assistant Adelaide Welling; the Treasurer is Jaymen Elliott with his Assistant Danny Thai, our Publicity Officer is Emily McIntyre with her two Assistants Dylan Rogers and Sian Liddy; our Attendance Officer is Jinny Dawson and the Website Officer is Rory Townsend. Five students were also elected to represent our school at District SRC and they were Steve Smith, Amelia Loughland, Laura Muir, Alex Cuthill and Jessie Grosser.

The 2008 SRC

The result of this conference was that the SRC Executives (the Year 12 SRC members) could produce our Plan of Action! It simply encapsulates our goals and visions for 2008 and where we are heading. So, here is a taste of where we plan to go!

Our goals for 2008:

1. Raising school spirit through increased student involvement.
• House Spirit
• Incorporation of more students in school/SRC events
• Increased school leadership
• SRC = role models
2. Give back to the wider community and school in a variety of ways
• Fundraising monetarily and via service
• Events that involve the wider community
3. Maintain effective communication between the SRC and the school community.
• Utilisation of all avenues of communication to students, parents, teachers and other members of the SRC

- We have established a Year Meeting Template, so SRC run year meetings can operate smoothly, effectively and be under control.
- A new concept of Vertical Groups have been introduced to promote effective communication, bonding and leadership within the SRC. Vertical groups are five small groups which contain a representative from each grade. They will be used to deal with an array of tasks/problem solving throughout the year.
- We have decided to support three charities-The Black Dog Institute, Stewart House and The Himalayan Foundation. We are also organising a blood donation day for the 25th February and have held a mufti day to raise money for our Sponsor Child, Elmo.
- Some of the activities that we have plan include many fun assembly plans, the introduction of house mascots, a ‘no electricity’ day, Pinestock (an annual music event with stalls!) and Manly Might Have Talent.

We look forward to a great year a head working with the school and our P&C! It was a fantastic experience revealing our plan of action at the P&C’s Annual General Meeting and we look forward to attending further meetings.

SRC Meetings are held in the school’s Common room on Monday lunchtimes. All students are welcome to come along and discuss any ideas or concerns they have- the only thing they can not do is vote! The supervising teacher for the SRC is Mr Hutton, who is full of knowledge and wisdom and does a fantastic job!

If you have any questions, concerns or ideas for the SRC or would like a full copy of our plan of action, do not hesitate to ask one of our SRC representatives or email our Publicity Officer (Emily McIntyre) here.
