The String Ensemble

The String Ensemble perform for parents and guests at Presentation Night

Over the years the MSC band program, under the leadership of its outstanding directors and supported by an enthusiastic and dedicated group of parent volunteers, has established a reputation as one of the very best in NSW.

The core of the BoMSC program is the Wind Stream and String Ensemble.  All BoMSC Members must play in at least one of the core Wind Stream bands or the String Ensemble.

The Wind Stream comprises three ensembles: Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Wind Orchestra.  The optional extension ensembles (Jazz Stream and Chamber Orchestra) and Jazz Combo support additional musical styles.

The Jazz Stream ensembles comprise Swing Band, Stage Band, Big Band and Jazz Orchestra. The String Ensemble is a stream in its own right.  Chamber Orchestra comprises selected String Ensemble members and wind and brass instruments.  Jazz combo is the senior MSC jazz improvisation group, membership by invitation.

The jazz improvisation stream is a cross-campus group open to students at any of the five Northern Beaches Secondary College campuses.

Term Two Band Meeting 22 May 2017:
Great to welcome some of the new Year 7 parents to Monday’s meeting. The meeting reported on the recent senior band and strings camp, the tour to Mt Gambier and upcoming performances.

An important topic of the meeting was the changes to the band management necessitated by the absence of a band president and vice president since the AGM on 7 November 2016. Further information about this has been emailed to band parents today.

Elana Roseth (Yaffe) was voted to take on the role of the president of the band committee, leading the executive for band program decisions involving policy, structure, salaries and fees. The position of band manager for day-to-day program coordination is being advertised to families within the school community via The Weekly Pines and emails to band families. Applications are requested by Friday 9 June, 2017

International Band Tours

Int tour itinerary

The MSC touring band group had a spectacular fortnight in Italy and Austria in April 2015. The tour fulfilled all hopes of being a magical musical experience for the band members, with their own performances reaching new heights and never to be forgotten musical experiences and venues like the jazz and wind masterclasses, the glorious acoustics of San Stefano church in Florence, the invitation to exclusively sit in on a rehearsal of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in the famous Musikverein Golden Hall.  A universal love of fine music brought us into contact with generous, gracious and extraordinary conductors, performers and cultural ambassadors in both Italy and Austria.

Past international band tours have included trips to China in 2012, Japan in 2009 and Europe in 2006.
